Adoption Policy
Suitable Home:
1. The Adopter agrees to provide a suitable home for the Adopted Animal. A suitable home is one which provides good wholesome food, water, shelter and protection from the weather, veterinary care, exercise, love and attention, as well as one that observes all state and local animal and city ordinances and anti-cruelty laws.
Treatment of Adopted Animal:
2. The Adopter acknowledges and agrees that;
- the Adopted Animal will be treated humanely;
- the Adopted Animal will not be used for any inhumane purpose;
- the Adopted Animal will not be used for any experimental purpose;
- the Adopted Animal will not be used for food;
- the Adopted Animal will not be used for illegal purpose, including but not limited to dog fighting;
- f. if the Adopted Animal is impounded at an animal shelter, the Adopter will pay all fines and charges necessary to claim the Adopted Animal.
Surgical Sterilization:
3. It is the policy of the HSSM to hold and fix all Adopted Animals. Therefore, you may have to pick up your Adopted Animal at a later date if it is not already altered.
Repossession:
4. The Adopter acknowledges and agrees that the H.S.S.M. has the right to request the return of the Adopted Animal if the H.S.S.M., in its sole discretion, determines any of the following:
- the Adopted Animal is not sterilized;
- the Adopted Animal is not being kept in living conditions satisfactory to the H.S.S.M.;
- the Adopted Animal is not receiving proper veterinary care; or
- the Adopter has breached any terms of this contract.
Inability to Keep Adopted Animal:
5. The Adopter agrees that if for any reason the Adopter cannot keep the Adopted Animal:
- the Adopted Animal will not be sold or given to a research facility; and
- the Adopted Animal will be returned to the H.S.S.M., or another humane society that is operating in the location where Adopter is residing at time.
Status of Adopter:
6. The Adopter is over the age of 21 years. The Adopter acknowledges that the Adopted Animal is not being adopted to anyone other than the Adopter and the Adopter’s immediate family, who share the same dwelling, and that the Adopter is and will continue to be responsible for the Adopted Animal.
Vaccinations and Medical Treatment:
7. The Adopter agrees to get all vaccinations for adopted Animal, assumes the costs for these services as well as performs them in a timely manner.
Health of Adopted Animal:
8.The H.S.S.M. reserves the right to withhold any guarantee if the Adopted Animal appears to have health problems at the time of the adoption. If the Adopter chooses to adopt the Animal under these circumstances, the Adopter acknowledges that he/she will assume the costs of treating the animal.
Temperament/Behavior:
9. The Adopter understands and agrees:
- that animals are different from human beings in their responses to human action;
- that the actions of animals are often unpredictable;
- that animals should be closely supervised when they are with children;
- that an animal’s behavior may change after it leaves the H.S.S.M. and accustoms itself to a home or other environment.
Return Policy:
The adopter is entitled to a refund ONLY with a note from a veterinarian that states that a medical problem exists and cannot be treated, or the treatment costs are in excess of $150.00. Any treatment costing less that $150.00 is the owner’s responsibility.
NOTE: If you return an animal for any reason, you are entitled to one (1) exchange, no refund. If you do not wish to exchange the animal, your fee will be considered a donation to the Humane Society.

The H.S.S.M. makes no claim or representation as to the temperament, health, age, or mental disposition of any animal put up for adoption.
Release and Discharge:
The Adopter hereby releases and discharges the H.S.S.M., its officers, directors and employees from liability whatsoever resulting from any damage to any person or property caused by said animal, and from any causes of action, claims, suits or demands that may arise as a result of injury or damage caused by or to said animal.
Waiver:
The Adopter hereby waives any causes of action, claims, suits or demands that Adopter, or his or her heirs, executors or assigns have or may have in the future against the H.S.S.M. its officers, directors and employees for any reason whatsoever related to the adoption of the Adopted Animal, including but not limited to the repossession of the Adopted Animal in accordance with this contract.
Liquidated Damages Clause:
The Adopted agrees to pay H.S.S.M. $150.00 as liquidated damages in the event the terms of this contract are breached. This liquidated damage value is agreed to for the purpose of establishing the value of the Adopted Animal and does not bar the H.S.S.M. from seeking return of the Adopted Animal by a judicial process or other legal means.
Attorneys Fees and Court Costs:
Adopter agrees to pay reasonable attorney’s fees and court cost in the event this matter is forwarded to an attorney for enforcement.
Right of H.S.S.M To Reclaim Animal:
If any false information is given to H.S.S.M. by the Adopter at the time of adoption, the Adopter is therefore in breach of this Contract, giving H.S.S.M. the right to reclaim the animal.
