The formula for the success of Countdown to Zero is simple:

Decrease Intake + Increased Positive Outcomes = More Pets Saved!

Spay/Neuter in general is of utmost importance to helping HSSM achieve our Countdown to Zero initiative of ending the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in our community.

However, reducing the number of kittens entering our shelter each Spring/Summer “Kitten Season” will result in the ability to save more pets overall. The stress that “Kitten Season” places on the shelter staff and the animals in our care contributes greatly to increased euthanasia during these periods at HSSM.

National estimates show that 80% of these unwanted kittens are being born to outdoor, “Community Cats,” who no one takes true ownership of. These Community Cats are the focus of HSSM’s Trap-Neuter-Return program, which offers low-cost spay/neuter services inside Harrison County for outdoor cats.

Trap-Neuter-Return is the most effective and humane means to control the outdoor cat population in any community and has proven to make a huge impact and greatly reduce the number of unwanted kittens entering our doors each Spring and Summer.

Of all the programs HSSM offers, the “Four Legs” of Countdown to Zero were chosen because of their ability for high-impact on the overall goal of eliminating the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in our community.
