Interested in saving an animal like Teddy?
Being a foster parent is incredibly rewarding and a fantastic way for “everyday” people to directly save the lives of companion animals. Fostering is also a wonderful way to experience the joy that having a companion animal brings into your life without having to commit to a long term relationship of 10 or 15 years– perfect for the person who has to move or deploy often.
Fostering means that a volunteer comes to HSSM, completes an application, and receives training and information about caring for ill, injured, or underage animals. The foster parent will then be offered foster cases that match their stated preferences (Cat person or dog person? Can or can’t bottlefeed? Prefer short or long-term fosters, etc) by our foster coordinator. When our foster coordinator finds the right foster for you, you’ll pick up your animal, a supply of medicine (if needed), and food or other specialty items if required. You’ll care for the pet or pets in your home, bringing them to HSSM for vet care as needed. When the pets are ready to come back to HSSM for adoption (which typically takes 2 to 8 weeks, but can be shorter or longer), you’ll bring them to us and we’ll help them find a great forever home.
No special expertise is required, just a little extra time, a little extra space, and a great big heart. Every animal you foster is a life saved!
