Kids Can Help
How Kids Can Help
Many children and teens are animal-lovers and would like to know how they can help the animals living at HSSM. There are so many things that kids can do to make a difference!

Some of the ways that kids have helped in the past include:
- Gathering aluminum cans for the “Cans for Critters” program
- Holding a bake sale, lemonade stand, or penny drive to raise funds
- Making no-sew fleece blankets for the kennels
- Asking teachers, scout leaders, etc. to schedule a talk or tour with our Humane Educator
- Attending our camps & afterschool programs to educate yourself about animal welfare
- Hosting a Supply Drive, or ask for donations in place of presents at your birthday party
- Making Dog Toys: Peel the lable and plastic ring off of a water bottle, then fill it 1/2 full with dog food & treats.
- Making Cat Toys: Sew or glue small fabric (felt is best) shapes together, stuffing with poly-fill and catnip
Although many young animal lovers are interested in working directly with animals, we are not permitted to have volunteers under the age of 16 as dog walkers, cage cleaners, etc for safety reasons. We can, however, arrange a tour for our younger supporters, which will include opportunities to pet some shelter animals.
