Surrendering a Pet

Thinking About Giving Up Your Pet?

Surrendering a pet can be a very difficult decision. There are many reasons why people feel they must give up a pet, and HSSM is here to assist those who are struggling with their pets.

If the issue is behavioral, related to pets reproducing, or if you are facing temporary financial problems that make purchasing pet food and supplies a problem, please give us a chance to help before you decide to relinquish your pet. Call or email the Wag-n-Train for more information and assistance.

If there is no other way to resolve your issues with your pet, we always recommend that owners do their best to rehome pets themselves. Even the best shelter can be very traumatic for pets and can lead them to experience breakdowns in health and behavior which could cause your pet to be euthanized. If you must bring your pet to the shelter, you may make an appointment and we will accept your pet in return for a surrender fee (listed below). Understand that before any pet can be placed in the adoption mall, they will be evaluated for general health and will take a battery of safety tests that check their behavior. It is not uncommon for animals to behave differently in the shelter setting than they would at home and it is certainly possible for normally “friendly” animals to fail important safety tests. Because of our limited options for treating health and behavior problems, animals that are judged to be too young, too sick, or too unsafe for adoption, will almost certainly be euthanized (put down).

If you will be giving up an animal, please schedule your surrender appointment by calling the Surrender Department (option 3 in the phone system) and then bring the appropriate forms to your appointment (below). You will need one form for each animal to be surrendered.
