HSSM Takes Possession of 90+ Dogs Due to Seizure

Harrison County Sherriff’s Department seized 90+ dogs and the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM)  is assisting by accepting and providing all medical treatment needed.

Harrison County Sherriff’s Department had received many complaints concerning the home where the 90+ dogs were seized.  Officers with the assistance of HSSM staff moved all dogs from the site of the seizure to HSSM’s shelter on Thursday, June 10.  Currently the dogs are being physically evaluated by a veterinarian.  Since medical history in unknown each animal will receive updated vaccinations and rabies shot along with any additional medicine that may be needed due to illnesses.

“These dogs deserve a second chance at life” said Tara High, Interim Executive Director at HSSM.  “But, we need the assistance of our community since we are almost at maximum capacity at our shelter.  If we can find 70 foster families that will accept a pet for a short period of time then we can save 70 lives.”

All seized animals are medium to large dogs and they are a variety of breeds.  In order to provide the necessary treatment to these 90+ animals HSSM is requesting assistance from available households that can foster animals for a short period of time.  Foster families are asked to accept a pet for 7 to 14 days and to provide medication to the pet as provided by HSSM.  Once the dogs are healthier HSSM will be able to find adoptable homes for them locally or somewhere in the U.S. through our Love Train transport program.

“It is a short term commitment that will change a pet’s life forever,” said High.  “We just want to give these dogs a chance at having a life they deserve.”
