TWENTY-TWO SMARTR ANIMALS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION MARCH 30 THROUGH APRIL 1, 2010
March 29, 2010 (Gulfport, MS) – The Humane Society of South Mississippi will be adopting out 22 SMARTR animals on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday (Mar 30, 31, and April 1) at the shelter located on Highway 49, Gulfport.
A total of 271 cats and dogs were transported to five shelters within the United States to find new homes. But, there are still 22 dogs left that need to be re-homed. The Humane Society of South Mississippi wants to find permanent, loving homes for these animals, primarily large dogs, and will be adopting them out over a 3-day period. These are special needs animals that deserve a second chance at life so big-hearted families are encouraged to apply.
Animal adoptions will begin on Tuesday, March 30 at noon and will continue through Thursday, April 1 at 6 pm. In honor of finding these SMARTR dogs a home the Humane Society of South Mississippi will charge a flat $60 adoption cost for all dogs in the shelter during those specific days. Interested and loving families will need to come to the Humane Society located on Highway 49 and speak with an adoption counselor.
SMARTR animals were seized on Tuesday, March 16 by the Harrison County Sherriff’s Department as a result of animal cruelty charges. Since then HSSM moved the animals to a temporary shelter where staff along with volunteers and the Harrison County inmates attended to and cared for the animals. Each has received their vaccinations and updated rabies shots plus received a physical evaluation by a licensed veterinarian. Some animals may be heartworm positive but HSSM is willing to pay for the medication that the animals may need as a result. Adopted animals will also be spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to going to their new homes.
