Pets For People
Adoption Assistance Program for Seniors at Humane Society of South Mississippi
Since 1984, the Purina Pets For People program has provided life-enriching benefits of pet ownership to Americans. The senior adoption program provides the opportunity for senior citizens, aged 60 years and older, to adopt a pet for little or no cost, by sharing the cost of spaying or neutering, vaccinations and additional adoption fees with the shelters. Nearly 300 shelters, including the Humane Society of South Mississippi, are involved in this program nationally.
Studies have shown that pet companionship may actually improve senior citizen health and outlook on life. Lowered blood pressure and stress reduction are among the benefits of pet ownership. In addition, seniors acquiring pets through the program report feeling happier and safer.
To apply for the program, seniors must complete a PFP application and a pre-adoption questionnaire. An adoption counselor will meet with the senior to determine if the screening requirements are met. Counselors will then introduce each person to a wide selection of pets from which to choose.
We have a wide variety of great adoptable pets from which to choose. Come to the HSSM and fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire during our adoption hours: 10:00am-5:00 p.m. 7 days a week. Our adoption counselors will be happy to answer your questions and help you find the animal that fits you and your lifestyle.
Pets for People is administered by the Humane Society of South Mississippi and is funded through a partnership with the Ralston Purina Company. If you have any questions or would like more information on the Pets for People program, please contact the HSSM at 228-863-4394.
