About HSSM:
The Humane Society of South Mississippi (Tax ID: 64-6034439) is the largest animal welfare organization in Mississippi and a leader in the animal welfare field nationwide. Each year HSSM serves approximately 12,000 animals, providing high quality care to those animals and innovative programs and services as solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis that plagues South Mississippi.
What is the Second Chance Ward?
The Second Chance Ward is HSSM’s groundbreaking effort to increase the number of pets we are able to save each year…to ensure that each pet that comes to us does, indeed, get the Second Chance he/she deserves.
Some basic facts on the Second Chance Ward:
- 41% of the dogs and cats HSSM was forced to euthanize last year could have been saved.
- That is a total of 1,802 dogs and cats who needlessly became victims of pet overpopulation
- Most succumbed to easily treatable illnesses like Upper Respiratory Infection (a cold)
- Lack of adequate isolation space and ability to treat illness in the shelter environment turned the sniffles into a death sentence
- Just 70 additional isolation spaces could save each of these animals who deserve their Second Chance
