The Wag-n-Train Outreach Program

The Wag-n-Train program is made possible through a generous grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) Mission: Orange initiative.

South Mississippi has too many pets– about twice the number we should have. Each year, over 16,000 pets are surrendered to the Humane Society in Gulfport, MS and only about half of those animals ever find a new home, despite the best efforts of shelter staff and volunteers.

When a pet comes to HSSM, it is a difficult time for everyone– the shelter, the pet owner, and most of all, the pet who is being abandoned. In many cases, the problems that cause animals to come to the shelter could be solved with a few tools and a little know-how, and the lives of thousands more animals could be saved every year.

The Wag-n-Train wants to help provide the tools and know-how that can keep pets and their owners together. Because the Wag-n-Train will come to your neighborhood, transportation and scheduling are no longer an issue and because the services provided by the Wag-n-Train are free of charge, there is no need to worry about cost.

• Pets having unwanted litters of puppies or kittens
• Unable to feed pets temporarily
• Pets escaping yard
• Pets destroying things
• Pets not potty trained
• Pets making too much noise
• Children engaging in unsafe behavior around pets
• Expecting a new baby and concerned about safety
• Pets do not have proper identification (collar, tag, microchip)
• Feral (wild) cat colonies
