The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) has always been committed to ending pet overpopulation and homelessness. However, as an open-admission shelter in the Deep South, we have been faced with a disproportionately large number of homeless pets in need.
But through our participation and 2nd Place finish in the 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge, HSSM realized that we are not so far from the dream of every shelter across the nation: to one day no longer euthanize any healthy or treatable pets.
In January of 2012, HSSM’s Board of Directors officially adopted the Countdown to Zero initiative, which commits HSSM as an organization to eliminating the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets.
HSSM’s goal is to reach a 90% Live Release Rate, based on the national set goal.
Why not 100%? HSSM is an open-admission shelter meaning we take in every pet brought to us, regardless of health issues, age, disposition, tendency for aggression, or any other factors that can decrease adoptability. Due to this structure, some percentage of HSSM’s will be too aggression or face major medical issues that preclude them from placement.
HSSM’s plan to achieve the Countdown to Zero initiative’s goal of eliminating the euthanasia of saveable (healthy and treatable) pets is dependent upon robust, ongoing support. HSSM has identified four key areas, which we have oh-so-cleverly dubbed “The Four Legs” of Countdown to Zero. Each of these “Legs” is a way that you, as a community member, can help HSSM achieve our dream:

Each of these “Legs” works paw-in-paw with one another to help HSSM achieve our goal of zero saveable pets euthanized in our community!
