Club Paws is the official Junior Humanitarian Leadership Group of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The club is designed to encourage and recognize our youngest supporters through a tiered badge reward program. Members of Club Paws are ages 5 years-15 years and demonstrate their support for the shelter pets of HSSM by contributing their time, talents, in-kind wish list donations or monetary contributions.
Children can earn their official Club Paws membership badge by participating in one of the following five activities:
Summer Reading Program
Children can visit HSSM during our six week reading program and read to the animals. This program provides children a non-judgmental outlet to develop their reading skills while allowing shelter pets to become better socialized through increased human interaction, reducing their stress levels and raising the probability of success in a home.
Although HSSM requires volunteers who handle animals to be 16 years of age, Club Paws will allow those children who are not old enough to give back to the shelter in different areas, such as making enrichment treats for cats and dogs, and shredding newspapers for kennels.
Club Paws will provide its members with resources and ideas to creatively fund-raise in their communities and schools for the animals of HSSM. Fundraising opportunities will include holding bake sales, lemonade stands, and other fun, age-appropriate activities.
Members of Club Paws will be given HSSM’s wish/needs list and encouraged to hold donation drives for supplies the shelter needs most, like cat litter, newspapers, treats and blankets.
Thrift Store Donations
Participants can donate their gently used toys and clothing items to HSSM’s thrift stores.
