  • Position Summary:

    Responsible for all aspects of animal care as it relates to animal intake and surrenders, cleaning, and walking.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    A team player, able to work in a fast paced environment.

    Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior required; with the ability to make decisions regarding the welfare of animals. Able to work weekends. Customer service experience helpful and animal welfare experience preferred. Basic computer skills in a Windows environment required. Committed to the mission of the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

    Qualifications:

    Must be 18 or older; able to lift 50 lbs.; able to stand, bend and perform duties as assigned.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Keeps all areas clean and presentable; maintains clean and sanitary kennels and cages. This is the main priority of the Animal Care Associates!

    Assigned dog walking.

    Bathes and grooms animals when assigned to do so

    Provides adequate food and water to animals

    Records all incoming animals correctly.

    Monitors and reports health or behavior abnormalities to Supervisor/lead

    Administers Medications as directed

    Performs medical processing and creates files for all adoptable animals

    Maintains a safe working environment in compliance with local and state regulations as well as OSHA standards.

    Ensures that all equipment is in good working condition and notifies supervisor of repairs needed.

    Assists customer with lost/found issues.

    Completes and enters all surrender data into computer.

    Assists surrender customer with animal related questions on behavior, etc.

    Responds to customer inquiries in a timely manner.

    Works with and oversees the duties of assigned volunteers.

    Is honest and professional in educating the customer on our euthanasia policy and the Asilomar Accord

    Maintains a professional and cordial attitude with fellow employees and the public.

    Represents HSSM and the mission in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

    Trains in euthanasia rooms and performs euthanasia

    Other duties as assigned.

    General Expectations:

    Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization.

    Creates, promotes and follows safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or non-compliance with OSHA safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal and organization at risk.

    Promotes integration and engagement of volunteers.

    Promotes communication and cooperation between HSSM departments.

    Actively solicits donations, promotes retail sales.

    Euthanasia certified. Performs euthanasia if necessary.

    Working Conditions:

    Work is performed in a normal clinic setting. Exposure to high noise levels and cleaning agents when in kennel area. Subject to animal bites and scratches. Able to handle animals of questionable health and temperament. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Standing, bending and stretching for 8-10 hours per day. Computer usage. Exposure to zoonotic disease.

    Position Summary:

    Responsible for facilitating adoption of HSSM animals and assisting with the care of HSSM animals in the adoption area. Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work space as well as tracking correct inventory in the retail area. Responsible for walking adoptable dogs. Assists in cleaning animal kennels and cages. Must be able to handle difficult customers in a compassionate and professional manner.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    Must be a team player, able to work in a fast paced environment. Excellent communications, customer service, organization, leadership, and multitasking skills. Customer service and/or retail experience is required. Ability to read and write English is required. Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior helpful; with the ability to make decisions regarding the welfare of animals. Must able to work on weekends. Basic computer skills in a Windows environment required, Committed to the mission of the HSSM.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    ·Current knowledge of animals in facility. Assists potential adopters by matching animals and owners.

    ·Assists and circulates among potential adopters.

    ·Cleans, disinfects and maintains sanitary animal holding areas of adoption mall areas at all times and assists animal care in cleaning kennels and cages.

    ·Rotates schedule of cleaning offsite cat kennels.

    ·Greets customers entering Retail/Adoption lobby in an appropriate and friendly manner.

    ·Researches and identifies venders and products.

    ·Seeks customer feedback to identify marketable products.

    ·Answers telephone.

    ·Replies to adoptions e-mails.

    ·Supports other shelter activities as needed.

    ·Knowledge of products carried in the store- including use of animal age appropriateness.

    ·Available for offsite sales/adoption events when needed.

    ·Merchandise products in a creative and appropriate way so that products are presented to customers in a way that maximizes sales.

    ·Responsible for pricing, placement and sale of merchandise.

    ·Data entry of donations/daily logs

    ·Responsible for the opening, closing, and daily operation of the Retail Register and Register computer.

    ·All other duties as assigned.

  • Rotates with Shelter Vet Techs

    Position Summary: Veterinary Technicians are primarily responsible for triaging patients within HSSM’s Wellness Clinic and assisting the Veterinarian with daily appointments. Surgical Prep Technicians are primarily responsible for administration of pre-anesthetics and anesthetics to animals prior to spay/neuter. They perform induction, intubation and preparation of dogs and cats for surgery. Surgical Prep technicians assist veterinarians with cursory examinations at intake and assist the public during the intake and discharge process. Veterinary Technicians are primarily responsible for administering medications, vaccinations, and monitoring the wellness of the animals in their care.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: This person must be a team player who is able to work in a fast-paced clinic environment. Having knowledge of animal care, behavior, and handling is preferred. Experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter environment is beneficial. Veterinary Technicians must possess excellent customer service skills for this position. This person must be committed to the mission and goals of the HSSM. Veterinary Technicians must be able to communicate in English.

    Qualifications: Must be 18 or older, able to lift 50 lbs., stand and bend for entire work shifts. Requires basic computer skills. This job is physically and sometimes emotionally demanding.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Assisting the public and their pets with the intake/ appointment process.

    Assisting the public and animals with the discharge process.

    VTs /Surgical Prep must ensure that adequate supplies are available and supply needs are communicated in accordance with established procedures.

    VTs/Surgical Prep need to minimize waste of supplies to ensure we are making the most of available resources.

    VTs/ Surgical Prep must ensure that all animals in their care are medicated on time and all medications are administered correctly.

    VT’s must be able to perform proper nebulization techniques

    Responsible for administering pre-surgical anesthetics, anesthetics as well as intubating and preparing animals for surgery.

    VT’s and Surgical Prep also administer vaccinations as requested as well as pain medications. Microchip implantations are also performed by the VTs.

    Surgical Technicians are required to monitor closely animals that have been induced to ensure they are breathing appropriately and have a normal heart rate.

    Technicians must assist the veterinarian in charge in the event of an emergency

    VTs must keep their respective work areas clean and well organized.

    They must sanitize surgical tables between animals to minimize the risk of disease spread.

    VTs are responsible for washing, preparing, and autoclaving surgical packs.

    VTs also make sure other individual instruments and surgical supplies are properly sterilized and available for surgery.

    VTs are responsible for the overall sanitation of the prep areas and exam rooms,as well as any area that is in their care to include proper disinfection of all surfaces and the floor.

    Other duties as assigned such as input of data, answering telephones, booking appointments

    Working Conditions: *Work is performed in a fast-paced spay/neuter clinic setting. Exposure to high noise levels and cleaning agents when in kennel area is likely. Due to extensive animal handling, this person is subject to animal bites and scratches. Veterinary Technicians must be able to handle animals of questionable health and temperament. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation will be necessary. Standing, bending and stretching for 8-10 hours per day are the norm. Exposure to zoonotic diseases can occur to do extensive contact with animals that are sometimes of questionable health.

  • Rotates with Clinic Vet Techs

    Having knowledge of animal care, behavior, and handling is preferred.

    Position Summary: The Shelter Veterinary Technician is primarily responsible for working with the veterinarians to ensure the health of animals in the shelter and in foster homes. Under the direction of the veterinarians, she/he will administer medications and vaccinations, perform diagnostic tests, monitor animals for signs of illness, and act as a liaison between the veterinarians and various departments.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: This person must be a team player who is able to work in a fast-paced environment. Having knowledge of animal care, behavior, and handling is preferred. Experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter environment is beneficial. Veterinary technicians must possess excellent customer service skills. This person must be committed to the mission and goals of the HSSM. Veterinary Technicians must be able to communicate in English.

    VTs must ensure that adequate supplies are available and supply needs are communicated in accordance with established procedures.

    VTs need to minimize waste of supplies to ensure we are making the most of available resources.

    Accurately perform diagnostic tests as requested by the veterinarians. These tests include, but are not limited to, fecal flotation, fecal smears, ELISA tests (parvovirus, heartworm, FeLV/FIV), TiterChek tests, urinalyses, skin scrapes, and Woods lamp evaluation

    Collect samples for diagnostic testing, including blood draws, feces and urine collection, etc.

    VTs must keep their respective work areas clean and well organized.

    Utilize PetPoint to enter information about diagnoses, vaccinations, and medications for each animal.

    Monitor animals in the shelter for signs of illness and report to the veterinarian for further instruction.

    Collaborate with shelter staff to ensure animals are properly cared for during their time at HSSM.

    Collaborate with Transport department to ensure animals are properly prepared for transport.

    Collaborate with Foster department to ensure foster parents receive medications in a timely manner.

    Collaborate with Adoption and Animal Care departments to ensure animals in need of surgery (spay/neuter, other as needed) are identified and appropriate paperwork is completed.

    Other duties as assigned including but not limited to assisting foster parents and adopters, assisting in kennel cleaning when necessary as well as behavior assessments.

    General Expectations:

    Must be willing to work some overtime if needed.

    Must have the ability to work independently and often without direct supervision.

  • Responsible for the general operation and success of the Thrift Store through customer service, including receiving and processing of donations and running the register, as well as displaying merchandise, identifying and posting items for online sales, and social media marketing.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: A team player, able to work in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication and customer service skills are a must have. Able to deal with people in a positive way while assisting customer with a professional attitude. Basic cash handling and computer skills in Microsoft, Excel, social media, and internet knowledge required. Committed to the mission of the Humane Society of South Mississippi.
